How is the economy and political situation? |

Bulgaria joined NATO in 2004 and is expected to be granted European Union membership in 2007. Since 1996, the country has experienced macroeconomic stability and positive growth rates. The currency is the Bulgarian Lev (1 Euro = 1.98 Lev) which is already pegged to the Euro. |

Is visa or any other formalities required to enter the Bulgaria? |
|
|
A valid passport is all that is required for visitors from the EU and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states for stays up to 30 days. In addition, the citizens of Cuba, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, the Republic of Korea, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro, Tunisia, Turkey and Switzerland may enter the country without a visa for a period of 30 days with a normal valid passport. A visa is also no longer required of visitors from the U.S, Israel, Japan, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, for stays of up to 30 days. A border tax of about $20 will be collected from such individuals on entering the country. If the planned stay is to be more than 30 days, or if traveling on a diplomatic or official passport, a visa is required and must be obtained in advance. |

Traveling to Bulgaria is easy! International airports are located in Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas and connect Bulgaria to the rest of the world. Travelling time from London to Sofia is 2 hours 30 minutes |

How is the climate? |
|
|
The country benefits from a temperate continental climate with clearly marked four seasons. A mild Mediterranean influence is felt in the more southerly regions and the Black Sea coast with average summer temperatures of 80+ degrees (fahrenheit) and an average of 1700 sunshine hours from May to October. Winters can be cold in other parts of the country, hence its popularity as a destination for skiers. |

What 'Bulgarian standard' means that one can see in many advertisements? |
|
|
One term that you will hear quite a lot is that the building you are about to see is of'Bulgarian standard'. What this generally means for a 'new-build' is that the interior is an empty shell, with no finished floors (i.e. just a concrete floor), an unfinished bathroom (i.e. no bath, toilet, shower etc.) and no kitchen furniture or appliances. It would also suggest, typically:
♦ PVC windows
♦ Internal doors installed, but not finished (i.e. may be in need of paint ing, and fixtures/fittings for door handles, lock etc.)
♦ No tiles (e.g. no bathroom or kitchen tiles on the floors or walls)
♦ Installation of the electricity cables, but no sockets installed
♦ Installation of the water supply, but no fittings to kitchen/bathroom etc.
♦ Smooth plastered walls and ceilings, but not painted
♦ Walls in place, dividing the rooms
For new-builds, it's not uncommon to buy apartments to this 'Bulgarian standard'. This is also referred to as the 'Bulgarian National Standard'.
So, is this a bad thing? Well, no, not really. In Bulgaria, the locals prefer to make the decisions on the finishing work for themselves, so this is actually the preferred way of purchasing a new home. It just means that you have to budget for the finishing work.

What is a 'first line' plot? |
|
|
You will hear the terms 'first line', 'second line', 'third line' etc. when you are looking at plots of land close to the cliff edge. What these terms refer to is the distance from the cliff edge.
First line plots are the plots that quite literally go to the cliff edge, or within five metres or so of the cliff edge.
Many buyers want to buy the 'first line' plots, because they are obviously not going to suffer from any obstruction in the future. First line plots will therefore be higher in price, because they will be unobstructed and offer the best possible view of the coast. |
